Learning How to Be a Photographer in Vienna

Photography is hard. I love being a photographer. I love being creative. But sometimes you hit a wall and don’t know where to go with your work. Should I be a street photographer? Should I try to compete and be another wedding photographer in Vienna? Should I go rogue and try a nice field like AirBnB photography? Or should I just give up?

Living in Vienna has allowed me to begin to practice more and find what my specific niche is as a photographer. While I love doing street photography and capturing the natural actions of people in their daily lives, I love even more doing portrait photography. With portrait photography I have learned that I can make people feel like a movie star. I have honed in on my style as a photographer which includes a slightly grainy film look to it that when shot correctly, looks like it’s a frame from your favorite movie.

The difficulty is, how to get more subjects for my photos. I struggle personally with asking people to do something for me. During my time working at Fleet Feet we had a leadership trainer named Tom Griffin who taught me the importance of if you never ask, you’ll never know.

I HATE asking…

But I’ve gotten over it. I’m beginning to connect with more and more people and feel confident in asking them to help me out and model for a shoot. I want to grow. I want to learn more.

Next week I have one of my first couple’s shoots with a pair of my great friends, pushing me more to step out of my comfort zone and try something new.
